This is a debate for the ages; who is or was Ozzy Osbournes greatest guitarist?
Is it the late great Randy Rhoads or the fantastic Zakk Wylde?
I will state my opinion:
I believe that Randy was a better song writer but for sheer talent and skill I will go with Zakk.
It is also my opinion that song writing is more important than skill.
So I will go with Randy even though I worship Zakk.
Robert...although I favor the sound of an acoustic, over an electric, I would like to put in my two cents, on this.
I agree with you, completely, about Wylde having the upper hand, with his superior technical skills. However, here is a curve ball, thrown at the belief, that song writing is more important, than skill ~ think about this...you have an incredibly, well-written song, being a written work of art, in and of itself. Now, put this song in the hands of a musical hack, and you've got one hell of a piece of crap, for a song. Yes, the example describes an extreme case, but may the point be made.
A truly remarkable song, is an example, of the real and tangible demand, to achieve BALANCE. Whether being a lyrical or technical God, if a piece has too much of one, and not enough of the other, to create that special balance, said piece will almost always, fall short of being considered exceptional.
Hmm... this is a hard one. I think Randy had more of a direct impact on guitarists, although Zakk just totally blew me away the first time I heard him. As far as outright skill, I'd have to go with Zakk. But since music isn't really a competition, and they've both made major contributions, I'd call it a tie ;)
Dude, how can you even ask a question like that? Two great guitarists with two distinct and masterful styles. I mean sure, Randy ushered in what was to be a magickel time for Ozzy but Zakk definately has contributed a whole helluva lot to the music as well. And let's not forget Jake E Lee, who for many is considered the Guitar Ninja and made a great contribution, as well.
So, if I really must answer, I honestly cannot in good conscience, choose one over the other, since I love and respect the hell out of both of them. Peace...
I'd have to pick Randy as my favorite. I just think he had a much better sound. Zack Wilde is an awesome player but his over the top tone kind of gets to me after awhile. Randy Roads was just better for me personally to watch as well as listen to.
